What is osteoarthritis?

This condition is the result of cartilage between the joints and bones deteriorating from repeated movements. The cartilage acts like a “shock absorber” to help prevent bone-on-bone rubbing. As the cartilage becomes thinner, the joints and bones no longer move as easily. In addition, as the cartilage dissipates, the body can respond with new bone growth to try to compensate. The most common type of new bone growth is bone spurs, which can be equally painful.

What Causes Osteoarthritis?

  • Age- Osteoarthritis is typically caused by aging. Genetics can also play a role, where people with a family history of the condition could be more likely to develop it themselves.
  • Obesity- Being overweight or obese is another contributing factor that can lead to osteoarthritis.
  • Mechanical wear- The protective joint cartilage becomes thinner and breaks down over time.
  • Previous injuries- Past trauma, such as fractures or torn ligaments, can alter joint mechanics.
  • Repetitive stress- Overusing specific joints can result in osteoarthritis.
