What is the Science Behind Physiotherapy?

People of any age, whether a kid or senior citizen, is eligible to leverage the health benefits of this exclusive healthcare practice. But, what makes it so popular? What is the science of physiotherapy? How does it work on the human body?

Well, physiotherapy is the science of physical rehabilitation and human movement. It works based on the knowledge of anatomy, rehabilitation sciences, physiology and kinesiology to promote an individual’s health and well-being. Let’s delve deeper into how it works, its effectiveness and its role in the healthcare system.

Science of Physiotherapy Explained

According to World Physiotherapy, physical therapy is a profession focused on improving human function and movement and maximizing physical potential.

It diagnoses, treats and prevents a wide variety of musculoskeletal and nervous system conditions.

The musculoskeletal system consists of bones, muscles, joints, connective tissues, ligaments and tendons. These are what help us move around freely.

Physiotherapy works on the principle that all the parts of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems are connected. Manipulating one part of the body can help you manage the pain in other parts of the body. Physical therapists manipulate the soft tissues, muscles, ligaments or bones using several techniques. Common ones include massage therapy, exercises, IMS, acupuncture, hot and cold treatment, etc.

The majority of cases of chronic pain occur due to the overuse of muscles or an injury. Physical therapy works towards improving the strength of the damaged muscles and restoring the patient’s normal range of motion and health. The treatment involves the use of exercises, therapeutic movement and other tissue manipulation techniques instead of medicines or surgeries.

The Process of Physiotherapy

Physical therapists work with the patient and other healthcare providers to help the patient reach their health goals. They identify and maximize your quality of life and movement through the promotion of good health, treatment of injuries and rehabilitation of physical activity.

Here’s what the process of physiotherapy consists of
  • Assessment– The physiotherapist undertakes a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s conditions and symptoms. They gather and evaluate the clinical findings to plan the next steps of the process.
  • Diagnosis- They decide whether the problem can be solved with physiotherapy or needs new professional advice. If physiotherapy seems applicable, they formulate an effective treatment plan.,
  • Implement- After getting approval from the client, the treatment process begins along with an education programme to aware the patient of what is wrong with them.
  • Evaluate & modify- Physiotherapy is an evidence-based practice. Hence, the professional evaluates the outcomes of the treatment and modifies the prescription accordingly.
  • Discharge- Finally, you receive a discharge plan when your health goals are achieved. This plan helps you prevent further injuries and keeps you active throughout your lifespan.

The unique fact about this profession is it is completely client-centric. Thus, every treatment is specific to the needs of the patient.

When to Visit a Physiotherapy Clinic?

As a rule of thumb, you should visit the nearest physiotherapy clinic if your pain hasn’t reduced in a day or two. The interference of the pain with your daily life is also a sign that you need to consult with a trained physical therapist.
