How does Physiotherapy Help You Deal With Knee Pain?

Physiotherapy is known to relieve knee pain & restore normal mobility in the area. Is it effective? How does it work? Read on to learn the role of physiotherapy in knee pain.

Is the knee pain keeping you up at night?

Does your knee hurt when you move around or do normal activities?

Well, there can be many reasons why your knee hurts. Some common causes include injuries, mechanical problems, and knee arthritis. The good news is not all types of knee pain need surgeries or medications. This is where the role of physiotherapy for knee pain comes into play.

Physiotherapy takes a non-invasive and painless approach to restore, maintain and heal the patient’s mobility. In the case of knee pain, the physiotherapist prescribes the right treatments to reduce it and improve your mobility.

What to Expect From Physio Clinics For Knee Pain?

The first visit to a physiotherapy clinic for knee pain is very important. That is when the physiotherapist learns about your pain. The more they understand your pain, the better they can treat you. So, here are the stages you go through at a physiotherapy clinic.

1. Thorough consultation

The physiotherapist gathers three key pieces of information during the consultation:

  • The history of your pain
  • Past medical history that may have triggered the pain
  • Factors that make the pain worse or better

They conduct a physical examination based on these data.

2. Motion evaluation

The physiotherapists assess how you walk to see if there’s any difference in the motion around your knee. You may have to perform different phases of working during this test.

3. Manual assessment

The professional uses their hands to apply slight pressure on different structures around the knee. This lets them know if there are abnormalities or addresses.

4. Measurement of range of motion

Your range of motion determines how far you can bend or stretch your knee. So, the physiotherapist uses specific equipment to measure your range of motion.

5. Strength testing

The physiotherapist also measures the strength of the muscular attachments around the knee. This lets them know if an imbalance or weakness in the muscles is causing knee pain.

Your physiotherapist has all the information they need to prescribe an accurate treatment plan to you. Share all your health concerns along with the medical problems you might have had.

Common Knee Exercises at Physio Clinics

You will receive a customized treatment plan for knee pain management after the consultation at physio clinics. The treatment plan consists of different types of exercises, manual therapies, etc. So, let’s check out the common physiotherapy exercises you can even try out at home for knee pain management.

1. Standing Quadriceps Stretch

Stand in front of a wall for balance. Bend your knee slightly so you can move your heel towards the buttocks. Now try to pull your heel closer to your body by holding the ankle. Hold the position for 30 seconds. Repeat the same with the opposite leg.

2. Calf Raises

Relax and stand in front of a wall. You may have to hold on to it for balance. Lift the unaffected foot to make the affected one bear all the weight. Now raise the affected foot’s heel as high as possible. Lower the ankle once you are done. Repeat 5-10 times, depending on your ability.

3. Step-Ups

Stand straight on the first step of a staircase. Bend one knee slightly and lower the opposite foot to the flower slowly. Just touch the floor with your toe and stand back up. Remember, your physical therapist will let you know the right height for doing this exercise.

4. Straight-Leg Raises

Lie down in such a way that your elbow is directly below your shoulders. Bend the knee that’s not hurting and keep the affected leg straight. Try to raise the affected leg 6 inches off the floor. Hold the position for five seconds and relax.

Consult with a professional physiotherapist to perform the above-mentioned exercises and more under supervision. You will receive a combination of treatments at physiotherapy clinics for knee pain management.
