Hip Bursitis: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Hip Bursitis is a common painful condition for middle-aged and elderly individuals. It will occur when Bursae or small fluid-filled sacks get inflamed around the hips.

This physical condition will not cause any joint deformity but can be the reason for uncomfortable movement. Before it gets out of your reach to handle, it is better to know its causes and start treatment. Physiotherapy is an effective way to lessen your pain and stiffness around the region.

Are you suffering from sharp and shooting pain on the outside or inside your hip? Here is a guide for treating your pain at its early stage.

What are the Symptoms of Hip Bursitis?

The first symptom of Hip Bursitis usually felt is stiff joints or tenderness. The pain can be sharp in the first few days but dull. You may feel discomfort if you get up from a chair or bed. Here are some other common symptoms you may suffer:

  • A warm feeling in the affected area
  • Localized pain
  • Increased pain at night
  • Stiffness or restriction of the hip area
  • Swelling
  • Reddening of the skin

What are the Causes of Hip Bursitis?

When bursae are inflamed, the area around the hip becomes very tender and painful.

In general, repetitive activities such as walking, limping, and running can contribute to the discomfort. However, injury, direct blows such as falls, repeated pressure and overuse of the hip, and a sedentary lifestyle such as prolonged sitting may also worsen the condition.

Additionally, if you have rheumatoid arthritis, gout and diabetes, you are more susceptible to this pain.

People with uneven leg length spine problems such as scoliosis or bone spurs also need to be cautious. They may develop a medical condition called Trochanteric Hip Bursitis when their hips get excessively swollen.

How Can Physiotherapy Treat Hip Bursitis?

The rehabilitation goals for hip bursitis are to reduce pain, improve range of motion, strength building and restore natural mobility. In addition, physical therapy involves treatment that reduces inflammation and pressure on the bursae.

Here are some standard physiotherapy techniques beneficial for Hip Bursitis:

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Your orthopedic therapist may use a needle to remove the fluid from the bursae to relieve symptoms.

Hot and Cold Therapy

Your physiotherapist may advise you to apply ice to alleviate swelling for the initial 48 hours of the pain or dry heat such as a heating pad to reduce the pain.

Therapeutic Massage

A therapist will massage adequately to reduce joint inflammation, relax muscles, and improve blood circulation.

Exercise for Range of Motion and Mobility

Your healthcare physician may advise you to perform exercises such as hip bridges, hip rotator stretch, clamshell to strengthen muscular support to your hip joint.
